Grandmother, Daughters, 1966-1972
Ki Ja left for America in June 1966. I knew that she would marry there at some point and it would be unlikely for her to come back to Korea once she left. I was sorry to see her go, but she didn’t seem to sense my sadness. She must have had a lot in her mind looking forward to her future in America. After she left, she was on my mind day and night. When I cooked dinner, I thought of her where she would be and what she would be eating then.
Sometimes I imagined her rolling on the vast grassy knolls feeling lonely.
